In the month's time that we began giving milk to Avery since her 1st birthday, we've noticed a lot of changes. And not so good ones at that.
She really took to milk and liked it A LOT. However, we noticed several changes in her, um, daily output and overall happiness. And lately, it seemed to get worse.
Her symptoms: diarrhea or super-nuggety (sorry, the only good way to describe it), painful poo and vomiting. We were concerned, but attributed it to a cold/flu bug that was going around at daycare, perhaps teething and/or the occasional change in digestion. However, it never seemed to get better. Our normally happy baby, was uber fussy, waking at night and more often than not, inconsolable.
I turned to Dr. Sears when we had projectile vomit before bed. Jimmy and I had discussed possible food allergies, although no significant changes were made to her diet. And then the possibility of a milk allergy. We were concerned that it was dairy in general, thinking back to a rough night involving macaroni & cheese.
Well, before we hurried her to the pediatrician, we cut out the milk and returned her to formula. And boy, did that ever do the trick. We're thinking that her tummy just wasn't ready for milk and perhaps still developing that needed enzyme to digest it properly. Or maybe she is lactose intolerant or allergic to milk, and if so, we'll figure things out when we try milk again at 18 months.
This all being said, we've slowly brought back cheeses (big fan of cottage cheese, that one is) and yogurt, without any negative reaction.
